Cars and Stars Series
Cars and Stars started in 2021 when I was 24 years old. I had just graduated from college and I was confused by adulthood, but too afraid to admit it. It was also COVID and during my time at home I took many walks around my neighborhood. Since no one was driving anywhere, I noticed all the cars were rarely moving, even growing spider webs on the tires. They became sculptural landmarks of my walks, frozen in time. Everything felt scary, confusing, unsure during this time. I can’t really tell you what percentage of these feelings were caused by COVID and what percentage were caused by the transition out of college. I had graduated from art school, I supposedly had art skills, but I also felt like an imposter.
I’m an extremely stubborn person and my cure for these feelings of imposter syndrome was to attempt a drawing so skilled and beautiful that it would prove that I was worthy of my title of “artist”. It was at this moment that I decided to take in the landscape of my neighborhood, and my inner landscape of feelings, and channel an imaginary dreamscape that tried to weave the two together in a mystical and colorful way.
Cars are often overlooked. I overlooked them up until this point. But my goal was to frame the cars in an eye-catching way that really made the viewer pause and look, just like I finally paused and looked during my neighborhood walks.
